Big Bang's G-Dragon Faces First Performance Controversy After 18 Years Since Debut
On the 25th, G-Dragon of the group Big Bang wrapped up the SBS '2024 K-POP Awards' held at Incheon Inspire Arena. This marked his first appearance on a year-end music stage in eight years. Having impressively showcased his skills at the '2024 MAMA Awards' in Osaka last month, anticipation for his performance was high.
Introduced as a "one-of-a-kind living legend that overwhelms the stage with his mere presence," G-Dragon ignited excitement among fans by performing his new song 'Power' along with hits 'Ain't Gonna Happen' and 'Coup D'Etat.'
However, post-performance reactions were mixed regarding G-Dragon's live singing. While many celebrated his undeniable presence and charisma, others criticized his perceived lack of vocal ability. G-Dragon performed using a live mix of AR (Augmented Reality) sound sources, but some fans were bothered by his vocal technique, which included a distinctive scratchy style and selective live singing.
Given that G-Dragon has been acknowledged for his talent since before Big Bang's debut, such reactions were unexpected. Yet, the reason behind the controversy was evident: the sound quality during the 'K-POP Awards' was unstable. Upon taking the stage, G-Dragon was seen repeatedly adjusting his in-ear monitors. Additionally, his frustrated lip movements caught on camera indicated that he was struggling with audio issues. This led to a performance where he had to compete with the AR sound as he covered it with his live voice, ultimately leaving both G-Dragon and his fans disappointed.
Despite the setbacks, G-Dragon maintained a professional attitude and expressed his love for the fans. After the performance, he left a bouquet in the audience and took photos with his dancers, showcasing the charm of a true 'original idol.' After being chosen as the 'Favorite Idol' in the 'K-POP Awards,' he humorously shared, "I thought I was the oldest idol, but it seems I’m still regarded as an idol. Thank you."
