Im Young-woong Faces Backlash After Controversial DM Critique

The Aftermath of Lim Young-woong's Controversial DM Remarks Continues for Four Days

On the 9th, during the podcast 'Maebul Show,' cultural critic Kim Gap-soo discussed the controversy surrounding singer Lim Young-woong's direct message (DM) comments. He pointed out that Lim's attitude of,

“Am I a politician? Why should I care?”
reflects a lack of civic basic literacy.

Kim stated, “Such a stance can be criticized and raised as an issue. Even if someone cannot speak out actively, if they adopt a bystander’s attitude, they should be seen as unworthy of the identity that Koreans have fought hard to build throughout our history.”

In response, Choi Wook added, “I want to criticize media outlets that display a non-neutral neutrality. Upon seeing Lim Young-woong, I felt quite frustrated. However, I believe I do not have the time to be annoyed by this right now.” Kim Gap-soo further emphasized, “The reactions so far have been insufficient. Given the rigidity and coldness of our society, the fear of speaking out due to the repercussions is clearly evident.”

Choi Wook then commented, “I have no desire to be friendly with Lim Young-woong. I really dislike him. However, I currently do not feel the need to discuss this issue.”

Lim Young-woong posted a birthday celebration photo of his dog, Siwol, on his account on the 7th. This day coincided with protests demanding the resignation of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who had declared a state of emergency. A netizen sent him a DM stating, “What are you doing in this situation?” and Lim replied curtly, “What?”

The netizen expressed disappointment: “While the whole country gathers to discuss the impeachment of a president who declared an unconstitutional martial law, I don’t expect your voice. Yet, it feels incredibly insensitive. Aren’t you targeting those of us who experienced the martial law era as part of your consumer base?” Lim Young-woong retorted, “Am I a politician? Why should I speak out?”

As a result, intense debates have arisen about whether Lim's remarks were thoughtless, or if celebrities are entitled to express political opinions freely. This ongoing discussion has even led to complaints directed at the Pocheon City Hall, which appointed Lim as an ambassador.

Meanwhile, Lim Young-woong is set to hold his concert 'Lim Young-woong Recital (RE:CITAL)' from the 27th of this month until January 4th of the following year at Gocheok Sky Dome.
