IU's management agency, EDAM Entertainment, has provided an update on the legal actions being taken against online harassers in 2024.
On November 11, EDAM Entertainment shared their official position regarding the status of criminal complaints, which were conveyed by their legal representatives at Shinwon Law Firm. They detailed issues related to threats, defamation, and harassment, including the distribution of false information and deepfake materials targeting the artist. To date, more than 180 individuals have been identified as defendants, with ongoing efforts to file additional complaints.
The agency reported various legal outcomes so far, including six fines and several conditional dismissals. In particular, the case involving baseless accusations against IU has prompted the prosecution to seek a fine of 3 million won, with ongoing trials pending. EDAM emphasized that any continued harassment would face stringent legal repercussions as they continue to monitor and gather evidence against persistent offenders.
Moreover, some individuals accused of defaming IU were identified, including a presumed former middle school classmate, and legal actions are currently in progress. The agency clarified that they are taking robust legal measures, including civil lawsuits for damages against the primary offenders, and further investigations are underway to ensure accountability. They are committed to protecting the artist's reputation and will not tolerate any form of defamation or cyberbullying.
In conclusion, EDAM Entertainment reiterated that they would not offer any leniency to harassers and will pursue strict legal action against anyone who continues to engage in malicious online behavior. They urged online community members to cease illegal actions immediately while reaffirming their commitment to a vigilant and proactive legal stance against such offenses.
