NewJeans Members Demand Return of Min Hee-jin Amid Legal Dispute with HYBE in Urgent Livestream

On September 11, NewJeans held an emergency live broadcast, calling for the return of their former Ador CEO, Min Hee-jin. This marked the first time the members openly addressed the ongoing legal disputes between HYBE and Min after five months of tensions. Notably, even the legally minor members, Haerin and Hyein, participated, showcasing a united front among the entire group, with rehearsed statements indicating their strong solidarity.

The members expressed their frustration by urging, “HYBE, please stop tormenting CEO Min Hee-jin and revert everything back to how it was by September 25.” They emphasized that this was a way to coexist without conflict, hinting that if their demands were not met, they might consider severe measures such as contract termination. Their anti-HYBE sentiments were evident during the broadcast, raising concerns about a potential breakup with Ador.

Particularly striking was Hanni’s revelation of her experiences that supported claims of bullying within HYBE, describing an incident where she was told to ignore other artists. This disclosure seemed to be a strategic move, underscoring the discontent within the agency. Although she reported it to the new Ador CEO, Kim Joo-young, no follow-up was made, leaving her feelings of dissatisfaction unaddressed.

Industry insiders are wary that this emergency broadcast may signal steps toward NewJeans' possible termination of their exclusive contract with Ador. The members jointly stated that while they've faced many unfair situations with HYBE, they intended to keep their grievances concise, as if issuing a yellow card. They clarified their request was not to demand more but simply to allow Min Hee-jin to return to her previous role, expressing their commitment to meet HYBE's expectations if granted this wish.

The question remains whether Ador can reverse the clock as NewJeans hopes. If Min Hee-jin capitulates and Bang Si-hyuk makes a favorable decision, it may not be impossible. However, the delicate situation is complicated by Min Hee-jin's prior missteps with other labels, limiting her choices as the label head must assert control over multiple artists.

Additionally, other HYBE labels like SEVENTEEN, Le Sserafim, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER continue to achieve remarkable sales and operating profits, placing NewJeans at a disadvantage. Within HYBE, NewJeans is valued but may also be viewed as just another group among others. Bang Si-hyuk's investment in Min Hee-jin, particularly a staggering buyout clause, illustrates the tension as the label navigates complex internal dynamics.

In order to take decisive action, one must be ready to sacrifice a part of themselves. Yet, the greatest strategy often lies in winning without a fight. The emergence of NewJeans’ members through the emergency broadcast reveals the underlying issues in the K-Pop industry, and while it is disheartening, it might open the door to a destructive litigation path for all parties involved.
