The 'Squid Game' Team Heads to Golden Globe Awards, Eyeing More Wins
On the 3rd, director Hwang Dong-hyuk and Lee Jung-jae from the popular Netflix series Squid Game (오징어 게임) Season 2 are set to depart for the United States in order to attend the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
Released on December 26, Squid Game Season 2 has already made headlines by being nominated for the Best Television Series - Drama category at the Golden Globes.
The only nomination for Squid Game (오징어 게임) 2 competes against several strong contenders, including the Japanese drama Shogun, which holds the record for the most wins at the September Primetime Emmy Awards, as well as Netflix’s The Diplomat, Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Peacock’s Day of the Jackal.
The submission criteria for the Golden Globe Awards stipulate that the works must have aired in 2024 and be made available to the organizers by November 4.
Reportedly, Netflix has already previewed Squid Game 2 to the awards jury ahead of time.
Reacting to the nomination news, local media such as Deadline and Hollywood Reporter highlighted the unusual nature of a pre-release nomination, stating, “This has primarily been an occurrence in cinema,” and “Squid Game breaks the conventions of American television.”
They further explained, “Typically, new TV series are not released at year-end in American television, but Squid Game Season 2 premiered during the Christmas holiday season, which allowed it to be recognized as a nominee despite being broadcasted earlier.”
In 2022, when Squid Game Season 1 was released, the team had three nominations at the 79th Golden Globe Awards in the TV category, including Best Television Series, Best Actor (Lee Jung-jae), and Best Supporting Actor (O Yeong-su). However, only O Yeong-su won, making it a historic achievement as the first win for a Korean actor.
Given this context, the anticipation surrounding the potential win for Season 2 in the Best Television Series category is intensifying.
Meanwhile, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards will take place on the 5th (local time).
